Trading Guide

Simple guide to trading mean reversion setups

🎯 The Basics

ReversionRank identifies stocks at extreme price levels that are likely to revert to their mean. Here's how to trade them:

1
Check the Rankings Daily

Look at both Technical Ranking and ML Ranking. Higher scores = stronger signals.

2
Choose Your Direction

REVERSION BIAS ↑: Oversold stocks likely to bounce up
REVERSION BIAS ↓: Overbought stocks likely to pull back down

3
Wait for Confirmation (Recommended)

Don't enter blindly. Use confirmation signals to improve your win rate. See confirmation methods below.

4
Enter & Set Exits

Buy/short the stock and immediately set your take profit and stop loss levels.

✅ Confirmation Methods

Don't just trade because something is "oversold" or "overbought". Wait for confirmation that the reversal is actually starting. Here are proven confirmation methods:

1. SMA 8 Crossover

For REVERSION BIAS ↑ (Oversold):

Entry Signal: Wait for price to close above the 8-period Simple Moving Average (SMA8)

Why it works: The SMA8 acts as a dynamic support/resistance. When price crosses above after being oversold, it confirms buyers are stepping in.

Example: NVDA is oversold at $148. Wait for a daily close above SMA8 ($149.20). Enter the next day.

For REVERSION BIAS ↓ (Overbought):

Entry Signal: Wait for price to close below the 8-period Simple Moving Average (SMA8)

Why it works: When price crosses below SMA8 after being overbought, it confirms sellers are taking control.

Example: TSLA is overbought at $350. Wait for a daily close below SMA8 ($348.50). Enter short the next day.

2. Opening Range Breakout

Use the first 30 minutes of trading as confirmation:

For REVERSION BIAS ↑ (Oversold):

Entry Signal: Wait for price to break above the high of the first 30 minutes (9:30-10:00am ET)

Why it works: If an oversold stock can break above the opening range high, it shows momentum is shifting from sellers to buyers.

Example: AAPL opens at $180, ranges $179-$181 in first 30min. Enter when it breaks $181.

For REVERSION BIAS ↓ (Overbought):

Entry Signal: Wait for price to break below the low of the first 30 minutes

Example: MSFT opens at $420, ranges $418-$422 in first 30min. Enter short when it breaks $418.

3. Volume Spike Confirmation

Entry Signal: Enter when volume is 150%+ of average daily volume

Why it works: High volume confirms institutional participation, not just retail traders.

How to check: Compare today's volume to the 20-day average volume. Look for volume bars that are noticeably larger.

4. Higher Low / Lower High Patterns

For REVERSION BIAS ↑: Wait for a "higher low" to form

Day 1: Stock drops to $100 (oversold)
Day 2: Bounces to $102, then pulls back
Day 3: Pulls back but only to $101 (higher than previous $100 low) ✅
Enter here - this confirms the downtrend is ending

For REVERSION BIAS ↓: Wait for a "lower high" to form

Day 1: Stock rallies to $200 (overbought)
Day 2: Pulls back to $198, then bounces
Day 3: Bounces but only to $199 (lower than previous $200 high) ✅
Enter short here - this confirms the uptrend is ending

📊 ReversionRank TradingView Indicator

We've created a free TradingView indicator that helps you identify high-probability entry zones with visual signals:

🎯 Directional Arrows

The indicator displays upward and downward arrows on your chart that signal the likely direction the asset will move. These arrows appear at key reversal points, helping you time your entries.

📈 Composite Oscillator

Below the price chart, a composite oscillator combines multiple technical indicators. When the oscillator line changes color, it signals the highest-probability entry moment for the reversal. This color change confirms that momentum is shifting.

How to use it:
1. Wait for an arrow to appear in your desired direction
2. Confirm the oscillator line is changing color
3. Enter the trade when both signals align

⚡ The Complete Strategy

Here's how to combine everything for optimal results:

Step 1: Identify the Setup
Check ReversionRank screeners for high-ranking setups (Technical Rate ≥ 8.0 OR ML Probability ≥ 70%)
Step 2: Verify the Direction
REVERSION BIAS ↑ = Oversold, expect bounce up
REVERSION BIAS ↓ = Overbought, expect pullback down
Step 3: Wait for Confirmation
Use one or more confirmation methods (SMA8 crossover, Opening Range Breakout, Volume Spike, or TradingView indicator signals) BEFORE entering
Step 4: Execute with Risk Management
Enter the trade, set your stop loss immediately, and manage position size according to your risk rules
⚠️ Important: High probability or high technical rating does NOT mean guaranteed profit. Always wait for confirmation signals before entering. The combination of high ranking + confirmation gives you the best edge.
